the bay area right now. we have seen some scattered light showers outside but once this cold front moves through, wow! these temperatures are going to plummet! we'll talk about that and the freeze watches going up coming up. >> and traffic-wise, sounds like we just got the overnight roadwork going on up and down the nimitz freeway this morning northbound 880, lanes blocked between davis and 98th. and then again as you get towards downtown oakland between 23rd and broadway. so we'll have a full wrap-up of your morning commute, that's coming up. >> thank you. well, it's all about the cold weather this morning. shelters are now open in santa clara county, this comes as freeze watches are about to start tonight across the bay area. len ramirez tells us for the homeless it's all about staying warm and surviving. [ pause ] >> okay. >> reporter: it was hours before the cold weather shelter would open but there he was bundled up on the doorstep of

the sunnyvale armory. navy rhett raymond cordero -- vet raymond cordero 71 years old and homeless. what's that going to mean to have a roof over your head? >> it would be great. >> reporter: the armory is one of three cold weather shelters that are opening up in santa clara county providing an additional 275 beds in sunnyvale, san jose and gilroy, just in time for an expected blast of frigid weather. >> i'm very grateful that we have this program and we're doing it. but at the same time, i'm filled with a lot of concern because we have over 7,000 people outside on any given night in this county and that's not nearly enough for everyone experiencing the cold. >> reporter: most of the homeless will endure the cold sleeping indoor ways, under bridges or in makeshift camps. some will not survive the winter. 40 people died on the streets of santa clara county this year. >> a lot of the folks that have been homeless living outside for long pedestrian already have untreated -- periods of time already have untreated medical conditions and the cold makes them more vulnerable. so my concern is that the cold

weather will only make it worse for them. >> use pajamas, good sleeping bag and beanie cap. >> reporter: this marine will be coming into a shelter. he says these days homelessness can happen to almost anyone. >> homeless people don't necessarily want to be homeless like myself. i'm working but it's not enough to get me out of the situation. i'm not homeless because i'm lazy or a drunk. it's just my current situation that happened to come upon me. >> reporter: len ramirez, kpix 5. >> people using the sunnyvale shelter will also get dinner and breakfast. this is the last season for the national guard armory because the building will be torn down next year to make way for affordable housing. >> they are doing good things for people out there. >> big change in the weather. yesterday we had nice temperatures up in the 60s. today we'll struggle to get in the 50s in some parts of the bay area. right now a cold front swinging through town. we have seen some scattered

light showers on our hi-def doppler radar. you can see some light activity moving through most of that focused into east and south bay right now but as we head throughout the day today, the front will pull by, temperatures not too cold. 53 in concord, 54 in san jose and 53 degrees in san francisco. once the skies clear out freeze watches are going up tonight and into tomorrow morning. continuing right through thursday. we are going to see some of these temperatures down to the 50s and 30s. we could see a hard freeze in some of the north bay valleys and also into the delta. temperatures for highs today, yesterday we were well into the 60s. remember we had some 70s and record-breaking temperatures just a couple of days ago. today maybe 54 degrees in san jose. 56 and windy in san francisco. temperatures in the mountains only in the 40s. it's going to get colder. let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence.

[ laughter ] >> all right. let's go out live towards 280 in mariposa. no big hot spots around the bay area. we have overnight roadwork around the area for the next half hour but you're good to go. 280 coming towards the ballpark, everything is looking good. not too many cars on the road at this time of the morning. let's show you where there are more cars towards the bay bridge toll plaza. we have some roadwork this morning from the incline out towards yerba buena island. san mateo bridge traffic looks great out of hayward or leaving foster city. both directions of westbound 92 holding steady about 13 minutes to get you across the span between 880 and 101. 880 we talked about this at the top of the show. there is roadwork this morning in oakland between 23rd and broadway. and then some lanes blocked as well in san leandro. and look at this, a little gusty outside as lawrence said. you can see our camera shaking as you approach the dublin

interchange. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. investigators in mountain view are trying to figure out what caused a mobile home fire that killed one person. the home at space parkway went up in flames yesterday afternoon. the flames were so intense and dangerous, firefighters couldn't enter. one person was found dead inside. police are looking for a 17- year-old who escaped from a juvenile detention center in san francisco. police say the teen ran off from the facility on woodside avenue between 6:30 and 7:00 yesterday evening. there is no word on how he escaped or why he had been detained. investigators say they are closing in on the suspected cat killer in san francisco. he is suspected of tossing a woman's cats into the bay last week. surveillance video shows a suspect leaving the hotel near the embarcadero. san francisco police say he was nearly caught yesterday but officers arrived too late. today the search is

expected to resume this morning for a plane that was carrying several members of a bay area family. the aircraft vanished over rural idaho and betty yu spoke to neighbors of the san jose man who was likely piloting the plane. >> reporter: dale smith is known to friends and neighbors in san jose as an experienced pilot, a mormon, father of five. >> they are usually a very sweet and gentle group of people and very giving. so i'm just hoping as i said the prayers will find them all in at one piece. >> reporter: some 700 miles away in the idaho backcountry search-and-rescue crews are hoping for better weather conditions to help them find the single-engine beechcraft bonanza similar to this one. it was carrying five family members. the plane was flying from oregon to montana when the pilot reported engine trouble and then lost contact with controllers.

the pilot intended to land here on the remote johnson creek airstrip. >> he flies frequently so i'm surprised that he has gone down or missing or whatever has happened. he stays in touch with everybody when he goes on these trips and all the airports or where he's landing, you know, so yeah, i would say it's something to be worried about. >> reporter: officials haven't confirmed who was on board but neighbors believe smith took this trip for pleasure with at least two of his children. >> we hope they locate them. we hope they're fine. we will hold on to hope until we hear something. >> i hope that everything is okay. i really, really do. >> reporter: betty yu, kpix 5. >> smith is the founder of a company that services data storage. oakland city council member libby shaaf is entering the race for mayor. shaaf hold the mayor's old seat on the city council and she

lance to focus her campaign on city crime. 70% of oaklanders rate crime as their top priority. >> i think oakland can do better. oaklanders deserve to have the police come when they call, that the city can be safe. fremont police plan to patrol retail areas on bicycles during the holiday season. the goal is to reduce crime in shopping areas and adjacent parking lots. teams of two bike officers will be deployed on weekends. police want to increase mobility beyond foot patrols especially in crowded areas. cyber monday has come and gone and perhaps you scored some attractive deals but did you remember to add the tax? a new state law that took effect last year requires you to pay sales tax for online purchases even if the retailer doesn't add it on up front.

>> regardless of whether they charge, you actually have to pay the tax if it's not a sales tax at the time of purchase you're supposed to keep your receipts and pay the tax at the end of the year. people don't do it. >> stores are losing business to online retailers because shoppers aren't forced to pay some taxes online. a new planned parenthood facility opening today in san mateo county. it is in the north fair oaks area just outside redwood city. protestors are trying to stop it and as kpix 5's ryan takeo reports, this comes two years after a public backlash prevented the group from opening nearby. >> it's troubling to our community that this kind of healthcare is coming and a breakdown of family values. >> reporter: linda potter has lived in redwood city for 50 years. she and a group of protestors are opposed to the opening of a planned parenthood clinic on el camino real. potter says it's not just about abortion. she says the clinic will lower

property values. >> this isn't helping. this used to be a family restaurant where they could have community. and now it's a blight. >> we come to expect a bit of a presence of protestors at some of our health centers. i think there is a small but very vocal community of protestors here. >> reporter: she argues there is a need in redwood city for planned parenthood. >> only 3% of abortions services. at this location we are not going to provide abortions by surgery, just abortions by medication. >> reporter: planned parenthood has been down this road before in redwood city. in fact, the last proposal was just about a block away two years ago. back then, the lack of parking spaces made planned parenthood back off its plans. >> if they don't get those parking spaces, right, they don't get to have their clinic here. right? >> we want planned parenthood out of redwood city. >> reporter: the clinic opens tomorrow. the patients may have to make

door especially a little further to the south now. we are seeing some scattered showers toward san jose and just to the north toward fremont, hayward, even along the coastline the peninsula into half moon bay. we are seeing scattered showers there, as well. not going to be much in the way of rain but once this cold front moves through, that's going to usher in some much colder air, chilly temperatures expected by the afternoon. yesterday well into the 60s. today we struggle to get into the 50s in some spots and tonight, a very cold night out there. freezing temperatures expected across much of the bay area away from the coastline. those cold temperatures coming in right from the gulf of alaska. that arctic air mass going to slide in toward the afternoon. temperatures around the state going to be chilly. 51 degrees in overnight roadwork. 54 redding. some snow in lake tahoe at 33. 44 snow flurries in the mountains in yosemite. storm system moving by throughout the day today then clearing out and that will be the big concern. temperatures going to get very cold tonight as those winds will start to subside. a little gusty out there right now but by tonight that will start to calm down.

highs today only 53 in fremont and pacifica, 54 hayward. temperatures in the east bay only in the 50s, as well. inside the bay you will see those temperatures a little more mild and 57 degrees in alameda and about 56 in san francisco. next couple of days these numbers plummet. highs on thursday, get this, in some of the interior valleys, only in the upper 40s. by friday moderating with a slight chance of showers but temperatures staying chilly through the weekend. all right, let's check your "kcbs traffic" with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. and outside we go. we'll show you some of our traffic sensors. we'll give you a wide view of parts of the east bay and north bay. we're seeing green everywhere so no hot spots. we checked our chp reports and this is pretty much what it looks like out there drivers moving at the speed limit. looks good towards the macarthur maze. eastbound 24 a little roadwork by the way heading out of the

year extension of the undetectable firearms act. democrats say they will seek a quick vote on renewing the ban and tightening restrictions. a fourth student has tested positive for meningitis at uc- santa barbara. the bacteriaial outbreak started spreading on campus last month. one freshman had both feet amputated when the disease affected the blood supply. more than 300 students who had contact with six students have been given antibiotics. it's spread through kissing, coughing and sharing drinks. autopsy results for actor paul walker could be released today. the star and friend killed in a fiery crash over the weekend. there were reports they were racing another car before the accident but as teresa garcia reports, investigators have now ruled that out. >> reporter: this video shows the crash and the explosion that created a huge plume of smoke and fire on saturday. crash killed paul walker and

the driver a professional car racer. the actor was at a fundraiser in los angeles for victims of the philippines typhoon when he decided to go for a friend in his porsche carerra gt. authorities say speed was a factor but they don't think they were racing. jim saw the pair before they took off. >> i know for a fact they weren't drag-racing. >> reporter: walker was best known for his role in the "fast & furious" films. the movies about street racing were huge worldwide. production on the 7th installment is delays because of the death. fans continue to pay their respects at a makeshift memorial set up at the crash site leaving behind candles and movie memorabilia. walker's father talked to reporters outside his home. >> i'm just glad every time i saw him i told him i loved him. >> reporter: investigators say they have yosemite to determine how fast the car was going when walker and his friend crashed. teresa garcia, cbs news, los angeles. >> and paul walker was
